Get ready for an exciting twist in the world of baseball! The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is about to shake things up for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
As the MLB regular season looms, the Diamondbacks' spring training camp is feeling a little less crowded. But here's the intriguing part: this temporary vacancy is actually a golden opportunity for the club's up-and-coming prospects to shine.
The WBC has called upon a dozen Diamondbacks players to represent their respective countries, taking them on a global journey to Tokyo, Miami, Houston, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. While this might seem like a setback for the team's brass, it opens up a unique coaching opportunity, especially for the infielders.
Among the WBC participants are some key Diamondbacks: Carlos Santana, Ketel Marte, Geraldo Perdomo, and Nolan Arenado, who are expected to form the starting infield on Opening Day. Even outfielder Alek Thomas and starting pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez and Michael Soroka are joining the international fray, leaving a noticeable gap in the Arizona roster for over two weeks.
"Our entire infield is stepping out, but they're playing incredibly meaningful games," says Arizona manager Torey Lovullo. "The middle infielders, combined with Santana, will be on the same team, which is a significant development."
And here's where it gets interesting: some Diamondbacks teammates will remain teammates in the WBC, while others will find themselves on opposing teams. Venezuela and the Dominican Republic are scheduled to face off, potentially pitting Rodriguez against the Dominican infield trio. Similarly, Canada and Puerto Rico could provide a friendly-fire matchup between Soroka and Arenado.
"In a spring training environment that can sometimes feel sterile, this adds an extra layer of competitiveness, and I'm eager to watch them play," adds Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen.
Nolan Arenado, a recent addition to the team via a trade from St. Louis, is no stranger to the WBC, having represented the United States in the 2017 and 2023 editions. This time around, he's suiting up for Puerto Rico, a move that he's excited about. "I'm proud of my Latin culture and heritage, and I'll give it my all for Puerto Rico," Arenado shared in an interview.
While the departure of these key players creates a void in spring training, it also presents a unique opportunity for the Diamondbacks' minor league players to step up. Arizona will continue its spring training schedule, with or without its lineup mainstays, giving prospects a chance to make a name for themselves.
"Some of our younger players, who we're all inspired by, will get some fantastic opportunities, and we're all looking forward to seeing them shine," Lovullo said. "It's a great time for them to showcase their skills and prove themselves."

Outfielder Ryan Waldschmidt, the organization's top prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has already made a splash in the Cactus League, hitting a home run with a bat speed exceeding 106 miles per hour. Tommy Troy and LuJames Groover, Arizona's first-round draft pick in 2023, are also prospects to watch, with Groover ranking among the top 10 third basemen in MLB Pipeline's rankings.
On the pitching front, left-hander Kohl Drake, acquired from the Texas Rangers last summer, is expected to benefit from the vacated innings this spring. With over 100 strikeouts in back-to-back minor league seasons, he's one to keep an eye on.
