The Tecno Camon 50 Ultra: A Camera Powerhouse, But Is It Worth the Hype?

The Tecno Camon series has built a reputation for its impressive camera capabilities, and the 50 Ultra aims to continue this legacy. But here's where it gets interesting: while it boasts a competent camera setup, it's a step back from its predecessor, the Camon 40 Premier. So, is it a case of one step forward, two steps back?
Rear Camera Setup:
The 50 Ultra features a triple rear camera with two 50MP imagers for the main wide and telephoto lenses, a downgrade from the 40 Premier's 50MP ultrawide. The new ultrawide is an 8MP sensor, sacrificing autofocus and resolution. This might be a strategic move by Tecno, possibly anticipating a future Premier model or reevaluating their lineup. Despite this, the main and telephoto cameras still deliver solid performance.
Selfie Camera Excellence:
But the real star of the show is the selfie camera. With a 50MP sensor and a wider 20mm lens, it produces exceptional results. The autofocus shines, ensuring sharp and detailed selfies, even at odd angles. This is a significant upgrade from the 40 Premier, making it a standout feature.
Daylight Performance:
In daylight, the main camera shines with excellent dynamic range, vibrant colors, and noise-free images. Human subjects look fantastic, with accurate skin tones and great detail. However, the 50MP shots reveal heavy sharpening, indicating a lack of underlying detail. The 2x zoom performs well in bright conditions but struggles with shadows and indoor lighting.
Telephoto Camera:
The 3x telephoto camera delivers mixed results. While it captures decent photos, it can produce a watercolor-like effect, and detail can appear midrange. Close-ups and portraits at 3x and 5x zoom levels are underwhelming, lacking sharpness and clarity.
Ultrawide Camera:
The ultrawide camera is a bit of a letdown. It captures decent 8MP shots but struggles with contrast and shadow detail. While it's not terrible for its class, it's not a standout feature either.
Low-Light Photography:
In low-light conditions, the main camera continues to impress with good detail and dynamic range. However, the 2x zoom results in soft and sharpened images. The telephoto camera struggles with detail and white balance, while the ultrawide's low-light photos are soft and don't hold up to close inspection.
Video Quality:
Video recording is decent, with 4K30 capability on three cameras and 1080p60 as a trade-off. The ultrawide camera is limited to 1440p30. Stabilization is a highlight, with a standard electronic mode and a Video steady mode for smooth footage. Daytime video quality is acceptable on the main and telephoto cameras but underwhelming on the ultrawide. Surprisingly, all three cameras perform decently in low light, with the ultrawide being almost unexpectedly good.
Final Thoughts:
The Tecno Camon 50 Ultra offers a capable camera system with some standout features, especially in the selfie department. However, the rear cameras, particularly the telephoto and ultrawide, might not live up to the expectations set by the Camon series.
