The girls' 200-yard freestyle relay team not only set a new CIF San Diego Section record but also claimed the state championship title. This achievement is particularly noteworthy, as it marks the first time a local relay team has won in the 11-year history of the state meet. The team, consisting of seniors Aya Ferguson and Katerina Weitfeldt, along with juniors Anita Qian and sophomore Scarlett Zhang, demonstrated exceptional teamwork and skill, finishing with a time of 1 minute, 33.52 seconds. This performance not only secured their victory but also showcased the depth and talent within the team.
What makes this victory even more impressive is the team's ability to consistently break records. Over the last three years, Torrey Pines has set the record six times, highlighting their dominance in the swimming arena. The girls' success extends beyond the relay events, as they also performed well in individual races. Senior Aya Ferguson, bound for Northwestern, finished seventh in both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle, while sophomore Ella Morgan from Granite Hills placed 12th in the 200 freestyle, just a second off her third-place showing from last year. These individual performances further underscore the team's overall strength and depth.
However, the story doesn't end there. The boys' team also made significant strides, setting a new record in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:02.93, just two seconds off the old mark. The quartet of juniors Aidan Copeland and Hamilton Gates, along with sophomores Kai Painter and Charlie Hall, demonstrated remarkable improvement from their section meet time of 3:05.40. This achievement not only highlights the boys' talent but also their ability to maintain high standards and consistently perform at their best.
The state championships also saw the emergence of new stars, such as Pint Loma junior Alex Pletcher, who recorded a section record and a top-three finish in the boys 200-yard freestyle. Pletcher's performance, coupled with the achievements of other swimmers like Grossmont sophomore Aramis Willet and Mt. Carmel senior Catherine Rowe, adds to the rich tapestry of talent in San Diego's swimming community. Rowe, in particular, came close to breaking her own record in the girls 100 backstroke, finishing third with a time of 53.75.
In the team standings, Morgana Campolindo won the girls' title, ending Santa Margarita's six-year reign. Santa Margarita, however, took the boys' crown, showcasing the competitive nature of the event.
