Primate Movie Review: Killer Chimpanzee Horror! | Rated R for Bloody Violence and Gore (2026)

Get ready to grip your seat—Primate is not for the faint of heart. With an R-rating for its relentless display of violent, bloody content, gore, strong language, and drug use, this film promises to push the boundaries of survival horror. But here's where it gets controversial: can a movie about a killer chimp truly terrify us, or is it just another over-the-top gore fest? You’ll have to decide when it claws its way into theaters on January 9, 2026.

Directed by Johannes Roberts—the mastermind behind 47 Meters Down and The Strangers: Prey at NightPrimate flips the script on a tropical vacation gone wrong. Imagine this: a group of friends, sun-soaked paradise, and a beloved family pet named Ben. Sounds idyllic, right? Wrong. Ben, the once-adorable chimp, transforms into a primal nightmare, turning their getaway into a fight for survival. And this is the part most people miss—Roberts didn’t just throw a scary chimp on screen. He meticulously crafted Ben’s character, balancing likability with sheer terror. As Roberts told Bloody Disgusting, ‘You needed to fall in love with Ben to a certain degree and then be terrified of him.’ Millennium FX poured countless hours into designing the perfect chimpanzee, ensuring every detail—from age to appearance—hit that sweet spot of horror.

In my Fantastic Fest review, I called Primate a ‘lean, mean horror throwback’ that wears its influences proudly while injecting fresh life into the genre. It’s a masterclass in technical precision, building dread with every scene, yet it’s not afraid to sprinkle in moments of dark humor. Roberts takes his crazed beast seriously, but he’s not above having a little fun with the concept.

Co-written by Ernest Riera, the film stars Johnny Sequoyah, Victoria Wyant, and Oscar®-winner Troy Kotsur (CODA). A newly released clip teases Ben’s terrifying attack on Lucy (Sequoyah), giving fans a taste of the chaos to come. But here’s the real question: does Primate redefine animal-attack horror, or is it just another entry in a crowded genre? Let’s debate—what makes a horror movie truly unforgettable for you?
