A bold move for a brighter future! New South Wales (NSW) is set to enjoy an extended Anzac Day long weekend for the next two years, and potentially beyond. This decision, announced by Premier Chris Minns, aims to honor the significance of Anzac Day while also providing much-needed public holidays.
But here's where it gets controversial: unlike other major holidays like New Year's Day and Christmas, NSW had never declared an additional public holiday when Anzac Day fell on a weekend. Minns believes this won't diminish the tradition but rather reinforce its importance.
The Returned and Services League (RSL) NSW, after consulting with its members, doesn't oppose the introduction of this extra holiday. Vince Williams, the acting president, highlights the opportunity it provides for serving Australian defense force personnel to spend time with their families.
And this is the part most people miss: NSW has fewer public holidays than all other mainland states and territories. While most Australians enjoy an additional three or four days off, NSW residents only get two extra holidays: the King's Birthday and Labour Day.
Christmas Island, on the other hand, celebrates an impressive six extra public holidays, including two for the Lunar New Year.
The Minns government is considering making this Anzac Day change permanent and evaluating the need for more statewide public holidays. They will assess the economic and social impacts of the extra holidays in 2026 and 2027, taking feedback from the community, businesses, and veteran groups into account.
So, what do you think? Is this a step in the right direction for NSW, or should they focus on other initiatives? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
