Costco's $22 million warehouse in Forney, Texas, is set to open in just a few weeks, marking a significant milestone in the company's expansion plans. The retailer has been on a mission to expand its footprint across the country, with an ambitious goal of opening around 30 new warehouses each year. Initially, CEO Ron Vachris projected 35 openings by the end of 2026, but this number was later revised to 28 during an earnings call. Despite the slight adjustment, Vachris assured investors that the target of 30 openings per year would remain in place for 2027 and beyond.
The Forney warehouse, located about 25 miles east of Dallas, is a substantial 161,251 square feet, as per project filings submitted to the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation in 2024. Construction began in February 2025 and is expected to be completed by June 2026, indicating that Costco is ahead of schedule. The retailer invested a total of over $22 million in the warehouse and an adjacent fuel facility.
This new location is just one of several Costco warehouses set to open across the United States in the coming months. By April, Costco plans to have six new stores open in the US and one in Canada. The first of these new warehouses will open in West Roseville, California, followed by South St George, Utah; North Visalia, California; New Braunfels, Texas; and a MB Business Center in Winnipeg. Costco's membership sharing guidelines are strict, with rules governing primary member use, household cards, guest policies, and authorized cardholders.
Costco has also addressed recent rumors of 24-hour closures for all its over 630 warehouses in the US. Contrary to popular belief, Costco will remain open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 19, during its regular business hours of 10 am to 8:30 pm. Executive members, who now enjoy early access, will have extended hours from 9 am to 8:30 pm. Additionally, Costco observes a total of seven federal holidays, including New Year's Day, Easter Sunday, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, but it does not close on MLK Day.
Costco has also implemented a major checkout change that could impact shoppers' positions in line. Some customers are even employing a sneaky membership move to unlock hidden savings. As Costco continues to expand and adapt to customer needs, it remains a go-to retailer for those seeking quality products and competitive prices.
