According to Stefen Rosner of NHL.com, the Islanders are in serious talks to acquire winger Conor Garland from the Canucks. But here's where it gets controversial... Tyler Myers, a defenseman, could also be part of the deal, but it all depends on whether he's willing to waive his no-movement clause. This clause has been a roadblock since he was removed from Vancouver's lineup to avoid injury risks.
The Islanders aren't the only ones interested in Garland. Other teams, like the Bruins and Senators, are also in the mix. However, Rosner's report suggests that the Islanders have taken the lead, even though the deal isn't finalized yet.
General manager Mathieu Darche has been open about the team's desire to add players with long-term contracts. After acquiring Ondrej Palat and Carson Soucy before the Olympic break, the Isles are ready to part with a first-round pick to get the right players.
The team has shown resilience despite early-season setbacks, including season-ending injuries to key players Alexander Romanov and Kyle Palmieri. Soucy and Palat stepped up as affordable replacements, and the Isles have been on a roll lately, with a 6-2-0 record since their arrival.
Darche wants to reward his team's perseverance and is willing to invest in boosting their offensive capabilities. With Matthew Schaefer as a franchise cornerstone on defense, the focus now shifts to improving the offense, which currently ranks 21st in the league with 2.92 goals per game.
Conor Garland could be the game-changer the Islanders need. His six-year, $36MM extension, signed last summer, means he's not just a rental player. He can provide an immediate boost to the forward corps this season and serve as a controllable asset for next year and beyond. This is especially important as the team faces the possibility of losing pending UFAs Anders Lee and Jean-Gabriel Pageau.
However, there's a catch. Garland's struggles this season might be due to his team's poor performance in Vancouver rather than any individual decline. His shooting percentage has dropped to 6.8, resulting in only seven goals in 49 games. Despite this, his overall consistency between 2019 and 2025 cannot be ignored, with an average points-per-game rate between 0.57 and 0.68.
Tyler Myers, while not a long-term solution, could provide a short-term upgrade over Scott Mayfield. Although Mayfield has better boxcar stats this season, Myers has handled a more challenging workload with higher deployment.
If the Islanders acquire both players, they might need to move out a contract, possibly winger Anthony Duclair, if he's willing to waive his no-trade clause.
